“Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan concerning Christ...”—Colossians 4:3
What an exciting period this school year has been for Kids for Christ USA! God is opening new doors and strengthening existing relationships as well. We have had media exposure across the USA which has brought much new interest in what we are about. As you might guess, some of those reading misinformation in the newspapers have varying opinions about what we do. The articles, although well written and balanced, gave some false impressions because a few things were not really explained very well.
To date I have not had a single negative response come into the office. The negative comments have come in the blogs and from those quoted in the articles - both in their comments and on their websites. The official position of KFCUSA to those responses is one of respect. We respect their opinions, their rights to voice them, as well as their right to exists, just as we would expect the same respect from them……..For the record, we have never had a parent voice concerns that a child might be coerced into becoming a follower of Christ. We do teach children to lead their friends to Jesus, but we are very careful to explain that it is something done only with respect for the person they are speaking to, (including authority figures). This is to be done in their free time, never in class.
I have centered my life and teachings around the direction of Jesus who instructed the young man who asked him, “What is the greatest commandment in the law?” Jesus’ answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind”. Jesus went on to say that the second commandment is equal to the first: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” I cannot tell you how many times I and those we work with have instructed that love is preeminent. In my view one who follows Jesus and his teachings should behave differently than one who follows the teachings of Christianity. Let me explain: Gandhi is quoted as saying, “If I had never met a Christian and only read the teachings of Jesus, I would have become a Christian”. OUCH, but sadly way too accurate. We attempt to instill loving people into the kids.
The bottom line is that more than ever before we need the body of Christ to pray for KFCUSA and the children of America’s public schools. We need your support at every and any level. If we are to help influence a movement, it must above all begin and remain based in prayer. Immersed might be a better word. Whether you ever set foot in a school or give a dime, Prayer is a must. Thanks for standing with us --bob
